Meet Shihan Patrick Hussey

Shihan Patrick HusseyShihan Patrick Hussey is the founder and chief instructor of Saratoga Karate. He has over 35 years of experience teaching traditional Japanese karate and is committed to providing quality instruction to all. He has significant experience and an extensive network in martial arts:

  • 35+ Years of experience in traditional Japanese Karate
  • Shichidan (Seventh Degree Black Belt)
  • Certified Personal Trainer, sick National Academy of Sports Medicine
  • Member, Shihankai Organization
  • Member, International Martial Arts Association
  • Member, International Martial Arts Union

Shihan Patrick Hussey has traveled on a long road since 1982, when he joined the World Seido Karate Organization under then-Shihan William Reid. He won the first tournament he entered in the autumn of that year, and continued to study until 1985. The following year, he joined the Kokorokan Karate Organization. Later in 1986, Shihan Hussey opened the first new Kokorokan dojo.

From 1988 through 1991, Shihan Hussey was invited by Sensei Tomo Kadachi, a Sixth Degree Black Belt in Judo, to perform weapons and kata demonstrations during his annual Judo Invitational Tournament held in Rensselaer County.

Since 1992, Shihan has taught weaponless self-defense seminars for the National Park Service in several states in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

In 1998, Shihan was faced with the most difficult decision of his life. After 17 years of dedicated and loyal service to Kokorokan, he knew it was time to move on. It was in October of that year that he founded the Tenkara Karate-Do Organization.

The name Tenkara, which means “point of origin,” was chosen because Shihan felt it was time to return to the roots of traditional Japanese karate, as taught by the masters Ginchin Funakoshi and others. Training in Tenkara is hard, but also based on love, compassion, understanding and respect. Through this teaching, the Tenkara student is well-rounded in his or her approach to martial arts and self-defense. Shihan also understands the responsibility of students to those around them. Outside the dojo, the student strives to help humankind and the world in which we live.

In the years since the founding of Saratoga Karate, Shihan Hussey continues to teach at the Tenkara Honbu in Saratoga, and gives self-defense-9lectures, exhibitions and seminars on martial arts. Shihan enjoys his visits to local classrooms and talking with students about making the right decisions in their lives. He is also involved in numerous charitable efforts in and around the Capital Region, including events for the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, and the Saratoga National Historical Park.
